The 2.4 mm silver tungsten bead has consistently been the most effective option on this pattern. It was inspired by combining elements from two excellent flies—one by Aaron Jasper and another by Pat Weiss—and has evolved into one of my confidence patterns for late summer through fall.
As olive hatches become more abundant, this fly excels when fished on tight-line presentations. The subtle UV hotspot beneath the thorax isn’t intended to be loud; it’s just enough to provide a trigger without overpowering the natural profile.
Research suggests that adult brown trout lose much of their sensitivity to the ultraviolet spectrum as they mature, but there is evidence that UV sensitivity may increase slightly again around the spawning period. Whether that’s the reason or not, this fly has proven itself year after year during late summer and into the fall when olives are an important food source.
